“I take great satisfaction in building something out of nothing. My work is the exact opposite of Michelangelo, who chipped away at a solid block of marble to form his pieces. I start from a rudimentary stick figure, then construct bone, muscle, sinew and flesh.”
Chippie Kennedy’s work is driven by her fascination with the presentation of the human form. She began her artistic career in fashion design, exploring the movement of the body in cloth, but her desire to understand the human body led her to sculpture. Her transition from cloth to clay parallels the search for the inner self, for an understanding of human form and spirit.
Chippie studied at the Florence Academy of Art in Florence, Italy, Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada, and the National Academy Museum and School of Fine Art in New York. Her work has been shown in private collections in Canada, Mexico, Italy, France, the UK, and the US. She divides her time between Canada and the US and has a long-established studio in the historic Lunenburg Foundry Building in Nova Scotia. In the past year she has expanded her presence in Lunenburg by opening the Foundry Art Gallery, representing the best in local and international artists.
